Chinese opera performance is built upon four fundamental skills: singing (chang), recitation (nian), acting (zuo), and combat or movement techniques (da). Each of these disciplines is supported by a systematic and well-established training methodology that forms the foundation of traditional opera education.

All students of Chinese opera are required to develop a strong command of these core skills. Only through rigorous training can performers confidently take on different roles, showcase the artistic beauty of opera, and deliver engaging and creative performances on stage.

Among these four skills, “Zuo” (acting and physical expression) plays a vital role in stage performance. It refers to the stylised movements, gestures, postures, and signature poses used by performers. These movements are not merely decorative; they are essential artistic tools for portraying character, expressing emotions, and enhancing storytelling.

This term’s Chinese Opera Movement and Stagecraft Training will focus on the following areas:

• Yunzhou (Cloud Whisk)
• Spear 
• Water Sleeve 
• Folding Fan 

Through structured training, students will learn the fundamental movements and performance techniques associated with these traditional opera props, while developing coordination, body control, stage presence, and artistic expression.
